The Defect is a malfunctioning combat automaton and one of the five playable characters in Slay the Spire 2. With 75 starting HP and the starting relic Cracked Core that channels 1 Lightning at the start of each combat, the Defect introduces the unique Orb mechanic that sets it apart from every other character. Its starting deck includes Strikes, Defends, Zap, and Dualcast, giving immediate access to Orb manipulation from turn one.
The Defect's playstyle revolves around channeling Orbs (Lightning, Frost, Dark, and Plasma) and scaling their passive and evoke effects through Focus. Lightning Orbs deal passive damage and burst on evoke, Frost Orbs generate Block passively and on evoke, Dark Orbs accumulate damage each turn and deliver it all at once when evoked, and Plasma Orbs provide Energy. Focus increases the effectiveness of all passive Orb triggers, making Defragment and Biased Cognition among the Defect's most important cards.
The Defect's key archetypes include Focus Scaling builds that stack Focus with Defragment and Biased Cognition while maximizing Orb slots with Capacitor, creating an army of empowered Orbs. Claw and 0-cost builds use Claw, Beam Cell, Go for the Eyes, and All for One to create a rapid-fire engine of cheap attacks. Power builds leverage Creative AI to generate random Powers each turn, combined with Echo Form to double the first card played each turn. Big damage builds use Hyperbeam, Meteor Strike, and Thunder Strike for devastating single attacks, though these often come with tradeoffs like Focus loss.
The Defect excels in long fights where Orb scaling can accumulate, making it strong against high-HP bosses like Kaiser Crab and Test Subject #C10. Multiple Frost Orbs with Focus can generate enough Block to trivialize incoming damage. However, the Defect is vulnerable to early aggression before its Orb engine is established, particularly against fast bosses like Vantom and Soul Fysh. Compared to the Ironclad's straightforward Strength scaling, the Defect requires more setup but achieves higher ceilings. The Silent and Necrobinder offer alternative scaling paths through Poison and Doom respectively, but the Defect's Orb engine is uniquely capable of providing offense and defense simultaneously.
