Lagavulin Matriarch

boss

Lagavulin Matriarch is one of the Act 1b bosses encountered in the Underdocks and is the evolved form of the original Lagavulin from Slay the Spire 1. True to her predecessor, the Matriarch begins the fight in a dormant state with massive armor, then awakens after a set number of turns or when provoked, debuffing your Strength and Dexterity while dealing heavy damage.

The critical decision against Lagavulin Matriarch is whether to attack during her dormant phase or spend those turns setting up. Aggressive decks with the Ironclad can use Inflame, Bash, and heavy attacks to deal significant damage before she awakens. The Silent's Poison from Noxious Fumes and Deadly Poison ticks away during the dormant phase, potentially stacking significant damage. The Defect should channel Orbs and play Focus-boosting Powers like Defragment during dormancy, then rely on scaling Orb damage once the fight begins in earnest.

The Necrobinder has a unique advantage against Lagavulin Matriarch: Doom execution completely ignores her armor and defensive mechanics. Building Doom stacks with Blight Strike and Death March during the dormant phase, then chipping her HP to the execution threshold once she awakens, is one of the cleanest strategies available. The Regent can use the dormant turns to accumulate Stars aggressively. All characters should be wary of the Matriarch's Strength and Dexterity debuffs. The Ironclad's Colossus and Inflame help maintain damage output despite Strength loss. The Silent's Footwork can be played preemptively to buffer against Dexterity reduction. Long fights against the Matriarch heavily favor decks with Power cards that front-load their benefits.
